How do I become a soccer referee and work for MWSRA?
Becoming a soccer referee and working for Metropolitan Washington Soccer Referee Association (MWSRA) starts with taking a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) new referee class.
- Classes are offered locally (usually in Rockville) twice a year at the end of the winter and end of the summer in preparation for the spring and fall seasons. Contact Larry Mittleman: lmittleman@verizon.net
- The new referee class is a 16 hour course that is traditionally held on back to back Saturdays (usually going from about 9 to 5).
- The new referee is responsible for paying a nominal fee for the class.
- At the end of the class, each participant will take the new referee entrance exam ( you need to score 75% or better to pass).
- If you complete all 16 hours of the course and pass the test, then you will be allowed to register with USSF, which requires paying your annual $40 registration fee to U.S. Soccer.
- You then need to get a starter uniform (official gold jersey, black shorts and socks, whistle, watch, black soccer shoes, and flags).
- Finally, after you register, you need to contact one or both of our youth assignors (Keyan Mohtashemi at keyan7@gmail and/or Jack Kyriakos at kyriakosjj@yahoo.com) to give your availability and receive assignments.
MWSRA is here to help you in your transition to becoming a referee. We have a mentoring program for new referees, which teams up new referees with Mentors (experienced referees) who will come out to the fields and observe and give you positive feedback and help you with your development.
