Assessment and Evaluation [Return to Top]

Getting an Assessment [Return to Top]

  • You need to contact the State Director of Assessment and request an assessment or formal evaluation for the level of game you are working. The SDA for Maryland is Jim Bober (410-969-1182)

What an assessor looks for [Return to Top]

  • Go check out this webpage for the articles by Dave McKee & Jim Allen

Informal Evaluations [Return to Top]

  • Most of the senior referees in MWSRA are more than willing to come out and watch you do a match. Make the effort ot contact them and work with them for a very beneficial experience. In addition, why not ask your assignor if there is any possibility of working with some more experienced referees to improve your officiating skills.

Retention and Recruitment [Return to Top]

Importance of Retention  [Return to Top]

  • Did you know that over 40% of the new referees do not come back (National Average, MWSRA not quite so high).  We need to work at mentoring the new referees to help maintain them and retain them in a very challenging hobby!

Recruiting new referees  [Return to Top]

  • Use every opportunity you have to try to get new referees. Some places are at games of older kids and adults. If you have a chance to talk to some players or parents, let them know that we need referees all the time.
  • Feel free to have them visit www.mwsra.org or e-mail Tadd (Tadd.Dawson@usa.net) or some of the officers.
  • Have them call Tadd Dawson at 301-681-5518 to get on the mailing list for the next new referee class.
  • Get there name and phone number (and address) and send it along to Tadd.Dawson@USA.NET
  • I am always looking for new sources of referees, please try to help replenish the shrinking pool of referees.
